Xpeng Tripled Its AI Visibility in 4 Days While BYD Barely Registers
AI visibility experiment results

Tesla dominates EV conversations everywhere — in showrooms, on social media, in the news. So it should dominate AI too, right? We decided to find out. We tracked 6 EV brands across 7 AI models for 4 days, and the results were not what anyone expected.
Well, except for Tesla. That part was expected.
Tesla scored 96 out of 100. Not a typo. When someone asks an AI assistant about electric vehicles — which ones to consider, which have the best range, which are worth the price — Tesla appears in the answer almost every single time. It's the only brand that comes close to AI omnipresence.
Everyone else is fighting over the scraps.
Here's where it gets interesting. BYD — the world's largest EV seller by volume — scored just 27. The company that out-ships Tesla globally, that has more models, more markets, more sales, barely registers in AI-generated answers. If a potential buyer asks an AI chatbot for EV recommendations, BYD is largely invisible.
Meanwhile, Xpeng went from 16 to 46 in four days. That's nearly a 3x jump in AI visibility over a long weekend. We don't know exactly what triggered it — a product announcement, a wave of coverage, a shift in how AI models weighted recent information — but the move was real and it was fast. AI visibility can change in days, not quarters.
Rivian told a different story. It peaked at 57 — briefly rivaling Tesla's dominance in certain AI models — then dropped back down to 34 by the end of our tracking window. That kind of volatility is its own signal. Rivian is the brand that AI almost recommends consistently. It's on the edge of the conversation but hasn't locked in.
NIO came in at 32, close to Rivian's final score but without the dramatic swing. Steady, middling, forgettable in AI terms. And Lucid scored 22 — premium positioning in the real world, near-invisible in AI.
What does this actually mean for these brands?
AI assistants are becoming a primary research tool for high-consideration purchases. Someone budgeting $50,000 for an EV isn't just Googling anymore — they're asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity. If your brand doesn't appear in those answers, you don't exist in that buyer's consideration set. You lost the sale before the test drive.
BYD's sales engine is real. But its AI presence is nearly non-existent in English-language models. That's a gap that compounds over time as AI search grows.
We ran this tracking through AIAttention.ai, which measures brand visibility inside AI-generated answers across multiple models simultaneously. The EV category turned out to be one of the most volatile we've tested — scores shifting meaningfully day over day.
The EV space has a clear winner, a volatile challenger, a global giant with an AI blind spot, and a brand that nearly broke through before retreating.
